Our listed buildings

Listed buildings are buildings of special architectural or historic interest and are listed by Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) based on recommendations from Historic England.

The recommendations are based on principles of selection for listed buildings (GOV.UK).

Wandsworth has around 500 listed buildings which include a wide range of building types and ages that are considered to be of national importance.

Listed building consent

Proposals for demolition or works to alter or extend a listed building that would affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest require listed building consent. This includes alterations to the interior.

It is a criminal offence to carry out works to a listed building without consent so it is advisable to consult the our Conservation and Design Officer at an early stage in the project.

How to find out if a building is listed

The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) is the most up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England and maintained by Historic England.
