The contractor Continental has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality from the first year of the contract, reinforcing Wandsworth’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Recycling facilities in parks, an optional feature in the tender, will also be implemented. In addition, Continental will introduce Hydrotreated-Vegetable-Oil (HVO) a stable, renewable, sustainable and high-quality direct diesel replacement that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.
Councillor Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment said: “As a Council, we are committed to supporting our residents, our staff, and our environment. Renewing contracts is a key way in which we’re able to keep moving with the times and ensuring that our partners and service providers are aligned with us in our vision for a greener, fairer Wandsworth.
“This decision not only ensures our parks will remain beautifully maintained but also introduces more sustainable fleet, recycling options for residents, and guarantees that staff receive fair wages. It’s a win for everyone, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this will bring to our community.”
Continental has committed to paying the Real Living Wage, ensuring fair pay for all staff involved in maintaining Wandsworth’s green spaces. This pledge aligns with the Council’s dedication to supporting local employment and promoting fair work practices across the borough.
