Councillors from across the political spectrum as well as some local residents filled shoeboxes with gifts, which were given to the New Horizons Centre by the deputy leader of Wandsworth Council Kemi Akinola.

The centre is based in Mitcham but offers support for Ukrainian refugees from across south west London. It will distribute the presents to refugees celebrating Christmas far away from their homes. Ukrainian Christmas is celebrated in early January.

“I’d like to thank everyone who have generously donated gifts,” said Cllr Akinola, pictured right with Polish Family Association CEO Slawek Szczepanski.

“And thanks to all those in Wandsworth who have helped in some way over the past few months, whether by supporting appeals, providing help or advice or opening their homes to refugees. It is hard to spend Christmas away from home, so I know that this gesture means a lot.”

Ukrainian refugees can also get help from the Polish White Eagle Club in Balham and there is a section on the council’s website with information on accommodation and other support available – including a page in Ukrainian. Find out more.
