Types of primary schools
There are 61 primary schools in Wandsworth (plus one infant and one junior school), most of which have a nursery class. There are also three individual nursery schools.
Children generally enter reception classes in primary schools in the September of the school year in which they become 5.
If your child is about to begin school and you are searching for a primary school, please contact them direct. You can request a prospectus, book a visit or attend an open day. The schools can also provide you with an application form to request a place.
Types of primary school
There are four different types of state-funded primary schools in the borough:
- Community schools - schools or colleges where the Local Education Authority (LEA) is responsible for the admissions policy
- Foundation schools - schools or colleges where the school governors are responsible for the admissions policy
- Voluntary aided (faith schools) - schools for which responsibility is split between the Council and the Church Authorities. The voluntary aided primary schools in the borough are either Church of England, Roman Catholic or Muslim. The governors of a voluntary aided school are responsible for admissions to the school
- Academies and free schools - state-funded independent schools where the governing body/academy trust are responsible for the admissions policy
