Railway bridge improvement works
We are improving railway bridges and underpasses across the borough to make them brighter, safer and more welcoming to use.
Planned works to create better routes for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic include:
- Upgrading lighting
- Cleaning up and jetwashing underpasses
- Commissioning public art
- Installing pigeon-proofing
Falcon Road rail bridge
The 100m-long Falcon Road underpass passes under the railway tracks cutting through the heart of Clapham Junction town centre. The bridge and underpass are being transformed with new lighting, pigeon-proofing and artwork on the walls.
The new design will celebrate local landmarks using murals and community-focused art to transform it from a dark and unwelcoming route to a vibrant and inclusive community landmark, paid for with funding collected from property developers.
The improvement project is being carried out in partnership with Network Rail. It began in July 2025 and will be completed in December during Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture.

Further bridge improvements
Improvements will also be made to bridges in Tooting, Balham, Battersea and Wandsworth Town throughout 2025 and 2026.
In response to community feedback, the two rail underpasses at Cavendish Road and Tooting Triangle will be treated with pigeon-proofing, new paintwork and cleaning. There are also opportunities for artwork on the walls.

We are also planning improvements to the pedestrian tunnels under the rail line on Bedford Hill, Balham, with cleaning, better lighting and opportunities for artwork.
