Queenstown Road improvements
We are introducing measures to improve facilities on Queenstown Road for pedestrians and cyclists.
Why we are doing this
Queenstown Road is amongst the Borough’s busiest commuter cycle routes and a key bus route.
In 2021, we carried out a consultation on proposed measures to the stretch between Chelsea Bridge and Queen’s Circus. These measures were designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist facilities, and also improve air quality and road safety.
The consultation results indicated strong support for the proposals and as a result, we are introducing these measures as part of the Queenstown Road Corridor Scheme.
Planned measures
We will:
- Widen and extend existing cycle lanes to cover the whole length of road in both directions. Segregation between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles will be clearly marked with kerbs and different levels between the surfaces
- Redesign existing bus stops to better define areas for use by pedestrians and cyclists
- Introduce protected right turns for cyclists into and out of Battersea Park through the use of traffic lights at the junction with Carriage Drive North
- Introduce new pedestrian crossings at the existing traffic lights by the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel
- Remove the traffic lights at the junction with Sopwith Way and replace them with a standalone push button crossing
- Resurface the footways and carriageway
- Plant additional street trees
- Provide additional cycle parking

Timescales
The works are scheduled to start in the week beginning 24 March 2025, and are expected to complete in Spring 2026, weather permitting.
Impact on road users
During the works, the footways may need to be narrowed and cycle lanes closed to allow for construction. Temporary traffic management may be put in place.
However, the road will remain open in both directions.
