Grit bins
A number of grit bins are to be placed at locations around the borough and stocked before the start of the winter service period. These are to provide residents with additional grit which can be placed on residential roads with known problem areas and steep inclines or used by people who choose to clear ice and snow from footpaths in front of their homes. Each bin contains one tonne of grit. These will be refilled regularly when the weather demands and will be removed and placed into storage after the winter service period.
Clearing snow and ice from pavements yourself
There is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your home or from public spaces. It is unlikely that you will be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully.
Neighbourhood watch co-ordinators are also being offered 50 kilos of grit each for use in their streets, while supplies are also available for churches and other community organisations.
Please do not spread grit too near pavement trees - especially young saplings. It is very bad for them.
