Non-standard cycle parking
This guidance is for riders of non-standard cycles such as cargo bikes, tricycles, hand-cycles, tandems and other adapted cycles. In other words, cycles which have unique parking needs due to their size and shape.
On-street parking places
Non-standard cycles can park in any permit holder or shared use (permit holder and pay and display) bay without displaying a permit or pay and display ticket.
They should be parked in a sensible manner that reduces the impact on parking space for other vehicles (at the end of bays where possible).
They should be parked within a bay and at 90 degrees to the kerb, except where the gradient/camber of the road does not allow it, or an obstruction could be caused to traffic.
Where not to park
Non-standard cycles must not park in the following parking places during controlled hours:
- Business permit bays
- Doctor permit bays
- Disabled persons' bays
- On-street loading bays (if not loading or unloading)
- Taxi ranks and restricted bus stops
- Trader parking bays
Yellow lines and footway parking
Non-standard cycles must adhere to yellow line restrictions as signposted.
They can park on pavements but must not cause an obstruction to pedestrians including wheelchair users and prams.
Register your non-standard cycle
You can register your non-standard cycle using our online form. Registration is optional but encouraged. It enables us to monitor demand for this type of parking and contact owners should we need to do so.
Report an obstruction
You can tell us about a non-standard cycle causing a pavement obstruction.
Policy review
Our policy for on-street parking for non-standard cycles will be renewed in 2025.
