Black History Month is a national celebration supported by the council with events in schools and libraries. This year’s theme is ‘reclaiming narratives’.

Throughout October and beyond, Wandsworth will be celebrating Black history and culture, with events, workshops and video profiles.

Wandsworth celebrates Black history and culture throughout the year with its Black History 365 programme of arts commissions. Deputy Leader of the Council Kemi Akinola said: “This year's theme of reclaiming narratives is about making sure the authentic voices and true stories of Black people are heard.

“As well as events during October, we have commissioned work throughout the year that shines new light on Black experiences and culture and celebrates the Black people who have done so much to shape our borough.”

The month kicks off with the Roots and Culture Market in Northcote Road on September 29 supporting Black-owned businesses. Other highlights include author visits and workshops at local libraries and arts commissions exploring Windrush and African fashion.
