Safer: The enhanced pedestrian crossing at Culvert Road underpass in Battersea

Pedestrian safety has improved at a busy route in Battersea as new traffic lights have been installed to manage vehicles through a narrow underpass.

The new lights at Culvert Road railway underpass mean that vulnerable road users can walk or cycle safely through the narrow route.

Vehicles are now controlled through a set of push button traffic lights on each side of the underpass.

The new lights mean that pedestrians and cyclists can now safely navigate the route, as access was previously limited to a narrow footpath alongside the road under the bridge.

With Harris Academy Battersea, Shaftesbury Park Primary School and John Burns Primary School all close to the underpass, families will be among road users to benefit from the improved safety.

The council worked closely with Transport for London (TfL) and Network Rail to design the traffic signal junction at the underpass where Culvert Road meets Culvert Place.

The underpass is an important walking and cycling corridor, which also includes a footbridge that links up Eversleigh Road and Culvert Road.

Councillor Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, noted the importance of these improvements, stating: “The Culvert Road underpass is a crucial route through Battersea for many residents and local road users.

“However, the narrow and busy route was hazardous for the most vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users.

“This investment in new traffic lights means that all road users can safely share the Culvert Road underpass, contributing to more sustainable travel across the borough.”

The road improvements will be monitored closely by the council over the coming months.
