Renewal: The council is investing developer funds to build community facilities

Wandsworth Council has worked in partnership with the local NHS to deliver the new health centre building with council infrastructure investment, using funding from property developers to improve community facilities.

The modern building will house Battersea Fields Practice, replacing the existing Thessaly Road branch just three minutes’ walk away. It is being fitted out as a modern primary care facility improving health services for residents living in the area, featuring 14 consulting rooms, five treatment rooms, rooms for interviews and groups, and multiple treatment spaces.

Opening in January 2026, it will provide GP-led healthcare with flexible space for community health services to meet the diverse needs of the local population. With increased opening hours, it will also offer nursing, physiotherapy, mental health support, children’s clinics, health checks, blood tests and minor surgery services.

'Tackling health inequalities'

Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health at Wandsworth Council said: “We're delighted that this funding enables a busy local GP practice to expand into a new, modern, health centre with improved healthcare facilities for local residents and families and to continue its excellent work in tackling health inequalities in Battersea. A strong NHS is integral to the development of the community. When Wandsworth grows, everyone benefits – without a penny added to their Council Tax.”

Mark Creelman, NHS South West London Executive for Merton and Wandsworth, said: “GP-led services at Battersea Fields Practice are known for their innovative care, including the 'Brazil to Battersea' community health and wellbeing model, so I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds in the new premises which includes communal space for health and wellbeing activities.”

Sara Morgenstern, Lead GP at Battersea Fields Practice said: “We are excited about the move to our modern, state-of-the-art facility just three minutes’ walk from our current location. The new building will provide a fantastic environment and allow us to better serve our patients' health needs. The staff team look forward to welcoming all our patients through the doors when we open.”

Patients to seamlessly transfer

The practice’s existing premises will remain open until services transfer to the new health centre. Registered patients do not have to take any action, they will continue to experience the same quality of care from the same GPs, other care professionals and support staff at the new location.

Battersea Fields’ main practice in Austin Road will remain open to ensure a seamless transfer during opening of the new branch in Sleaford Street.

The council has worked with partners to deliver the new health centre, including NHS South West London Integrated Care Board, NHS Property Services and Battersea Fields Practice.
