Children at two more primaries could benefit from School Streets 

Children and their parents at two local primary schools could soon be enjoying safer and healthier journeys to and from the school gates if plans for two more School Streets are approved following a public consultation.

Proposals have been drawn up for the two primaries – All Saints in Putney and Battersea’s Belleville at its Meteor Street site – to join the borough’s existing network of School Streets at 26 schools if local people back the plans. 

The scheme prevents vehicles from using designated sections of carriageway in the immediate vicinity of schools during the start and end of the school day. 

At All Saints the plans would involve vehicles not being permitted to access the road space outside the school gates at Putney Common between 8.15am and 9am and from 3pm to 3.45pm during term time.

At Belleville’s Meteor site, there are two sets of alternative proposals.

The first would involve the closure of Meteor Street along its entire length between Tregarvon Road and Marmion Road.

The second alternative plan would involve the closure of Meteor Street as outlined above, but with an additional closure of Forthbridge Road between Marmion Road and Clapham Common North Side.
       
In both scenarios, if the plans are approved, vehicles would not be permitted to access the School Street on term time weekdays between 8.20am and 9.10am and also from 3pm to 3.40pm 

Jenny Yates, Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Transport said: “School Streets are designed to create a much safer and healthier environment for children and parents on their journey to and from school.

“Putting measures in place to reduce dangers from vehicle traffic and improve air quality will help encourage walking and cycling. This is a key priority for the council.”
