Wandsworth’s ambitious bike hangar rollout

Published: Tuesday, March 25, 2025

120 new bikehangars are currently being installed across the borough, providing secure cycle storage for residents who want to travel more sustainably. The additions mean that Wandsworth is rolling out the most ambitious bikehangar programme in any local authority area, bringing the total number of bikehangars in Wandsworth to 347, with more to come. The intention is to make it easier for people to choose cycling as a practical, everyday option.

Bikehangars are secure, weather-resistant storage units that hold up to six bikes each. They are about the size of a small car and occupy half of a standard parking space. Of the 120 new bikehangars, 118 are located on-street, with two ring-fenced specifically for housing estate residents.

Cllr Jenny Yates, Wandsworth Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "We know that lack of storage is a barrier to cycling for many people, especially those living in flats or without outside space. By expanding our bikehangar network, as well as greatly increasing our investment in improving our roads and pavements, we're making it even easier for more residents to choose active, sustainable travel."

The council’s investment in cycle infrastructure is part of its commitment to supporting residents while keeping costs for residents low. This year, we have frozen the main element of your council tax for the third year running, ensuring households can still access great services without extra financial pressure.

We are a listening council, responding to what residents tell us they need. Since launching the bikehangar programme in 2020, we’ve used your feedback and requests to identify locations where cycle storage is most needed and then consult with local people to make sure the hangars are in the most useful places. The next consultation will take place in mid-2025.

How to get a space

You can rent a space in a bikehangar for £72 per year, which covers maintenance and management by CycleHoop or Falco. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and tend to fill quickly once a new bikehangar is installed.

For more information about bikehangars, including how to apply for a space and where your nearest hangar is, visit the CycleHoop or Falco websites.

Residents who are eligible for the Access for All scheme can apply for a bikehangar space with a 50% discount on the annual cost. To find out more, contact hello@wandsworth.gov.uk.

Other cycling options in Wandsworth

If you don't need a space in a bikehangar, but would like somewhere safe to leave your bike, you can request a 'Sheffield stand' - a small metal bike loop that you can lock cycles to. Find out more about requesting Sheffield stands.

We have partnered with Peddle My Wheels for the Try Before You Bike scheme, a user-friendly scheme that is specifically designed to encourage people to cycle. The convenient subscription model enables residents and businesses to hire a bicycle, e-bike, cargo bike, e-cargo bike or trailer with the option to buy the bike at the end.

We have partnered with OurBike to offer a cargo bike hire scheme as an affordable, sustainable alternative to motor vehicles. There are five locations across the borough, with two more coming to Putney and Tooting this year. The first 60 minutes ride is free for all new users, or £3 per hour after that.
