Wandsworth launches new Neighbourhood Renewal Fund for local improvements

The Leader of Wandsworth Council is asking residents to send in their ideas and suggestions for neighbourhood improvements which will be paid for using funds collected from local developments.

The council collects funds from developers carrying out work in the borough – and we want to re-invest these into our local communities based on residents’ requests.

Speaking at the council’s Tooting community drop-in event, Simon Hogg said: “Our Neighbourhood Renewal Fund ensures that developers in our borough contribute to making it better for all. This is our new approach to investing funding and we are working hard to make sure that you have a say in where we spend this money.

“I’ve really enjoyed hearing directly from people living in Tooting Bec and South Balham about their priorities for this area. We need to know what really matters to people living in all our town centres and neighbourhoods so please take five minutes to look at our interactive map and tell us what you think about your area.”

The new online map makes it easy for people living in Wandsworth to tell us how they’d like to shape their neighbourhoods by dropping a pin and leaving a comment or request. The council will use this feedback to help make decisions on how to re-invest developer contributions back into local community improvements.

The new approach, which comes as the council starts a decade of renewal in streets and neighbourhoods, is community-driven and needs-based for each area. Local consultations and engagement will help to decide how the money will be spent.

 

Listening to you

The Tooting community drop-in on Saturday 16 March was the latest in a series of roadshow events at which the council leader, the local MP and ward councillors were invited to talk to residents and listen to local concerns and suggestions.

Councillor Simon Hogg answered questions on local issues including traffic, roads, community safety and Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture 2025 plans. Residents also enquired about council services and sought guidance and support from council staff and local police, alongside organisations including CREW Energy and Citizens Advice Wandsworth.

About neighbourhood funding

The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund will use the funding from Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) payments which the council secures and collects from developers to benefit the local area.

In July 2023 the council agreed to un-ringfence Nine Elms NCIL and make it available for allocation across the wider Battersea community, benefiting more local people in the north of the borough.
