The service delivers courses from its East Hill site, local venues, and online, helping equip adults with essential skills to help them make the most of life and work in Wandsworth. It focuses on English, maths, and English for Speaker of Other Languages (ESOL), alongside vocational training in areas including health and social care and hospitality.

One apprentice shared how the programme has transformed their career: “The Team Leader Apprenticeship really helped me elevate my management skills... I had several comments from other managers and staff about how my confidence had improved and the positive changes I brought to the department. This also helped me get onto the Level 5 Operational Management course, which I am completing soon.”

Another learner, a Wandsworth resident returning to work after raising a family, shared the impact of the service on her life: “After taking extended time out from working (15 years) to raise children, I needed to return to paid employment, and I enquired and signed up for a number of courses. My confidence and knowledge soared, so much so that I sent my CV to a job I saw advertised and got the job!”

Ofsted inspectors commended the service for:

  • Expanding its course offer in response to local and regional skills needs
  • Creating a supportive and inclusive environment for adult learners and apprentices
  • Helping learners return to education with confidence
  • Equipping participants with skills that improve job prospects and independence

Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Children, said: “We’re proud to be recognised for the quality of our adult education and to be rated ‘Good’ once again. Our Lifelong Learning team is helping residents build brighter futures through skills, confidence, and opportunity.”

Learners gain practical skills and knowledge that prepare them for their next steps, including confidence in using digital tools like databases. ESOL learners become more independent and begin using English in everyday life and work, supporting Wandsworth’s role as Borough of Sanctuary by helping newcomers feel welcome.

Tutors create an inclusive environment where learners and apprentices respect and value each other’s backgrounds. As a result, they thrive, growing in confidence and enthusiasm for their studies.

Apprenticeships offered include Team Leadership, Operations Management, Business Administration, Customer Service, Teaching Assistance, and Health & Social Care. Learners benefit from experienced coaches, clear career guidance, and pathways into employment, further education, and advanced apprenticeships.
