Old York Road is continuing its transformation this summer, with new paving, planting and public space improvements taking shape as part of our borough-wide neighbourhood renewal programme.

Work is progressing well, with the pedestrian and cycle-only area outside Megan’s restaurant now relaid with high-quality paving. Much of the new planting has already been completed, and 14 local businesses have volunteered to help care for the young plants over the summer while they become established.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "We’re making great progress on Old York Road, and it’s fantastic to see local businesses getting involved and helping to care for the new planting. This project is about creating a space that works for everyone – whether you’re walking, cycling, shopping, or just enjoying the area. It’s part of our wider commitment to invest in every corner of the borough."
In response to feedback from residents, a temporary chicane was installed to slow cyclists and encourage them to dismount while passing through the recent worksite. Cyclists travelling towards Wandsworth Town Station from the Wandsworth gyratory could continue to use Ferrier Street as an alternative route. A go-slow zone remains in place for e-bike riders, supported by operators Lime and Forest.
The improvement works will continue from the junction of Ebner Street to the junction with Ferrier Street in the autumn. Remaining planned improvements on Old York Road will recommence once the lifts and second entrance works at Wandsworth Town station are completed by Network Rail, planned for some time in 26/27.
This project is part of our wider Decade of Renewal – a long-term investment in cleaner, greener and more accessible neighbourhoods across Wandsworth. From Tooting Broadway to Queenstown Road, we’re working with local communities to deliver improvements that support local businesses, improve safety and create more welcoming public spaces.
The Old York Road scheme was shaped by local feedback following a successful trial during the pandemic. The final design retains vehicle access while improving the street’s character, safety, and accessibility. Permanent planting, high-quality paving, and clearer separation between walking and cycling areas are all part of the plan.
