Wandsworth Council has launched its new Growth Plan – a blueprint to grow our local economy for the benefit of all our residents based on real assets, good transport connections, educational institutions and skills.

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, was joined in Wandsworth Town by Howard Dawber, London’s Deputy Mayor of Business and Growth, together with Fleur Anderson MP, to launch the Growth Plan, meet local businesses and hold a business round-table discussion.

Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for Transport, Jenny Yates, and Kemi Akinola, cabinet member for Business also joined the visit to meet businesses.

This new place-based approach to renewal and investment is rooted in the connections between growth, housing, health and the environment to meet the needs and aspirations of local people across the borough.

The plan sets out a clear vision for Wandsworth’s future, building on its strengths as a creative, connected and compassionate borough with three key themes:

  • people first
  • placemaking
  • inclusive growth.

The council will work with partners to deliver economic, social and environmental outcomes together, supporting thousands of new genuinely affordable homes, good local jobs and investment in neighbourhoods during our decade of renewal.

'Incredible assets and innovation'

Council Leader Simon Hogg said: “It was great to talk to local businesses about how our plan will put people first and unlock inclusive growth that works for everyone in Wandsworth – whether you’re a young person looking for your first job, a family in need of a secure home, or a resident who wants to see real investment in your local high street.

“Wandsworth is open for business - we have incredible assets and innovation here, coupled with a readiness to play our part in the capital’s growth story with a new growth corridor connecting us to central London.”

A key feature of the plan is the Clapham Junction Growth Corridor (see image above) – a strategically important and connected stretch of the borough extending from central London through Battersea and Nine Elms, then onwards to Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Town.

As the UK’s busiest interchange, Clapham Junction is at the heart of this corridor, which is set to deliver thousands of new homes, jobs and public realm improvements. The corridor will unlock land for future development, enhance transport links, and create vibrant, connected communities through place-based investment.

Howard Dawber, London’s Deputy Mayor of Business and Growth, said: “With strong existing infrastructure and real assets, including the UK’s busiest interchange at Clapham Junction, Wandsworth has a major role to play in unlocking the inclusive and sustainable growth we need to see across London over the next decade. The Mayor and I are committed to working with boroughs across the capital through the London Growth Plan to build a fairer and more prosperous city for all.”

The Growth Plan also aligns with the Mayor of London’s London Growth Plan, recognising Wandsworth as a key strategic area for housing, infrastructure and economic development.

Last week, Simon Hogg and Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, welcomed London's Walking & Cycling Commissioner Will Norman and TfL to Wandsworth as they launched community engagement to shape the future of Wandsworth Town Centre.
