Major transformation work under way on Falcon Road bridge

Published: Thursday, July 31, 2025

Falcon Road rail bridge in Clapham Junction is undergoing a major transformation over the next few months as we redesign the underpass to create a safer, brighter and more welcoming route. The works include new artwork cladding along the length of both walls underneath the bridge, enhanced lighting, pigeon proofing, a new paint system to the bridge structures and landscaping to the south side of the bridge.

Community-led: concept artwork on panels reflects local area

In our year as London Borough of Culture, the Falcon Road bridge renewal will celebrate local landmarks using murals and community-focused art to build local pride and make it brighter. This will be paid for using contributions from property developers and will not add a penny to your Council Tax.

The new design will address key community concerns such as safety, lighting and noise reduction, after the council listened to the views of local residents and businesses as well as feedback gathered in the Night Time Strategy and Clapham Junction masterplan consultations.

'Long overdue improvements'

These improvement works follow extensive resident engagement, workshops and survey, with over 1,000 responses to help pick the winning design team who are redesigning the underpass. The collaborative design team, led by GPAD and POoR Collective, developed the design over months of engagement and activities with the local community to create a lasting legacy.

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “As part of our Decade of Renewal, we are making long overdue improvements to Falcon Road bridge. This is a key route through Clapham Junction town centre which is used by the local community every day and we listened to their concerns. The work will transform the underpass into a safer, cleaner and more attractive place, making improvements that residents have told us they want to see.”

The work, in partnership with Network Rail, started on 21 July and will take approximately five months, with overnight closures under the bridge for three weeks from 28 July. The underpass is set to be completed in December 2025.

What you can expect

Vehicles

From 28 July, Falcon Road will be closed in both directions overnight from 9.30pm to 5.30am for three weeks. This is to prepare and paint the underside of the railway bridge. Clearly signposted diversions will be in place via Trinity Road, and two traffic management operational staff will be on site at all times.

To safely carry out the daytime works, we need to install temporary traffic signals under the bridge which allows us to work on one side at a time.

To ensure better traffic flows through the area, Wandsworth Council and TfL will not permit any non-emergency roadworks on the diversion routes.

Pedestrians

One footway will remain open for pedestrians throughout the works, with pedestrian crossings provided at either end. A covered walkway will be in place to ensure safe access through the underpass.

Marshals will be on site overnight to provide security and assistance at either side of the underpass, and in the middle. Cyclists will be asked to dismount and walk through.

Jenny Yates, cabinet member for Transport said: “We understand there will be short-term disruption, but we’re committed to keeping traffic flowing and pedestrians safe. We’re working closely with Network Rail and TfL, and our engagement officers are visiting local businesses to discuss access needs.”
