Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to our health, no matter who you are or where you live. The burden of long-term exposure to air pollution in the UK is estimated to be equivalent to 29,000 to 43,000 annual deaths for adults aged 30 and over.
As part of its work on air quality Wandsworth Council is supporting Clean Air Night 2025, to spark a conversation about wood burning and other forms of air pollution. Come to Putney Exchange on Wednesday 22nd January between 1pm and 4pm to talk to air quality officers.
Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are determined to make Wandsworth a healthier, greener place to live, work, and visit. By supporting initiatives like Clean Air Night, investing in sustainable infrastructure, and working closely with our community, we can continue to drive down pollution levels and protect the health of our residents.”
Recent data confirms that air pollution levels in Wandsworth are continuing to decline, with nitrogen dioxide levels dropping significantly in recent years. This success is largely attributed to the Council's proactive approach, which includes regular air quality monitoring and investment in green infrastructure and active travel options.
Central to Wandsworth’s efforts is the promotion of active and sustainable travel. We have implemented several initiatives, such as:
- School Streets: This programme temporarily restricts vehicle access outside schools during drop-off and pick-up times, reducing pollution, emissions from idling, and improving safety for children.
- Cycle training and bike loans: People in Wandsworth can access free or low-cost cycle training and bike loan schemes to encourage more cycling as an alternative to car journeys.
We also actively work to help residents reduce their environmental footprint:
- Warm Home Packs: These free packs include practical tools to help residents reduce energy consumption and keep their homes warm during winter, improving energy efficiency while cutting costs.
- Green infrastructure investments: Ongoing improvements to public spaces, tree planting, and the development of pocket parks are designed to absorb pollutants and create cleaner, greener environments.
Everyone is encouraged to take part in improving our air quality and learn how small changes—such as reducing car journeys, adopting cleaner energy practices, or participating in Council schemes—can make a big difference. You can create your personalised air pollution action plan on the Clean Air Night website.
