New bins on housing estates to improve recycling

New waste and recycling bins are being installed across nine priority housing estates in Wandsworth, starting with the Alton Estate, to improve recycling.

The new bins make areas look tidier, cleaner, and more welcoming. They also come with better signage about what can and cannot be recycled, supporting people to do the right thing and preventing items from going in the wrong bin, which leads to contamination.
Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Housing estates have some of the lowest recycling performance in the borough. We have listened to resident feedback and are installing these new bins to help people recycle correctly.
“This is part of our Cleaner Borough plan. We are working to improve recycling services across the whole borough while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”
These new bins are just one way we are improving recycling services on estates. We are also introducing a free food waste recycling service and delivering improved communications to inform residents what they need to do.
Baris Alis, a local resident living on the Alton Estate, said: “I am very happy with our new bins. They are much easier for us and it’s so clean. Thank you for everything.”
The first bins are being installed at the Alton Estate, with the full rollout to all nine priority estates set to be complete by November 2025.
