The initiative which focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths (STEAM) has been piloted at Burntwood School in Wandsworth. The programme empowers students to put into practice essential STEM skills by building and assembling their own DJ audio mixer.
Audiotonix, a leader in audio technology and manufacturing, has developed its pioneering initiative to encourage the next generation of engineers and creatives.
It aims to provide access to the programme to all schools and youth groups, especially where funding and opportunities are limited. All participating students are given the tools and experience to explore STEM learning in a fun and engaging way, whilst also learning about potential new careers. Students who took part in the pilot programme expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to engage in practical, hands-on learning, rather than just reading about engineering and electronics in textbooks.
One student shared their experience, stating: "This project has been so much fun. I’ve learned so much about electronics and engineering, and it’s given me the confidence to try more STEM activities in the future."
The pilot event and collaboration between Audiotonix, Burntwood School, and Wandsworth Council showcases how a progressive partnership can boost STEM education within the local community. We support this initiative as part of our commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young people. With its strong connection to arts, live events, and broadcast sound, it is perfectly aligned with Wandsworth’s year-long programme as the London Borough of Culture.
Kate Stock, Cabinet Member for Children, said: "The partnership with Audiotonix is a fantastic opportunity to enhance children’s education in Wandsworth. By bringing practical, hands-on learning in science and technology directly into our schools, we’re helping young people build the skills and confidence they need for the future. It’s an exciting step forward in our commitment to supporting children’s growth and ensuring they have access to innovative and engaging educational experiences."
The programme introduces students to career pathways in fields such as audio engineering, product design, software development, and electronic engineering. By engaging in this hands-on experience, students gain practical skills that could help them pursue roles in technology, innovation, and the creative industries.
James Gordon, Chief Executive Officer at Audiotonix, said: "It’s been encouraging seeing the pupils and staff at Burntwood School fully engaging with this project, and providing the launchpad for us to deliver STEAM kits to thousands of like-minded students and schools in the UK and around the world.”
Nicholas Bull, Headteacher at Burntwood School, said: “We are delighted to be the first school to pilot this fantastic initiative. Giving our students the opportunity to engage in hands-on STEAM learning not only develops their technical skills but also fosters creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. This kind of innovative learning experience is invaluable in preparing them for the future.”
