This year’s annual report from Wandsworth Council’s Director of Public Health Report focuses on the vital issue of childhood vaccination.
The report, called Moving the Mountain, looks at the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination programmes, provides an in-depth understanding of the factors contributing to the decline in vaccine uptake in Wandsworth and explores strategies to reverse this trend.
The report comes at a crucial time, with recent data showing an uptick in measles cases nationwide. In Wandsworth, efforts are being intensified to ensure that all children receive the necessary immunisations to safeguard their health.
Approximately 1 in 5 children born between April 2008 and March 2018 in the borough are currently unprotected or insufficiently protected against MMR. By focusing on community engagement and collaboration, the report outlines a clear path forward.
Insights and perspectives from local residents, GPs, and vaccine delivery partners have been instrumental in shaping the report’s recommendations. Their voices and experiences highlight the importance of a unified approach to improving vaccination rates. The report reaffirms the critical role of vaccinations in protecting children’s health and presents actionable solutions to enhance coverage in the borough.
Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health and Chair of the Wandsworth Health and Wellbeing Board, said: "This report is a testament to our community's commitment and determination to improving childhood vaccination rates. By working together, we can overcome the challenges and ensure that every child in Wandsworth is protected against preventable diseases."
