Clapham Junction bridge renewal project launched

Architects, designers, and artists are invited to submit their innovative proposals for a chance to rejuvenate this essential route which runs through the heart of Clapham Junction.

The Transforming Falcon Road Bridge design competition aims to revitalise and renew the bridge and the route running beneath, turning it into a vibrant, artistic space.

We’re looking for design teams to re-imagine this 100m-long tunnel beneath Falcon Road rail bridge, improving the experience for the whole local community including pedestrians, cyclists and people living and working in the neighbourhood.

'Improvements are long overdue'

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: “The gloomy and unwelcoming Falcon Road bridge cuts right through the middle of Clapham Junction’s thriving shopping, residential and transport area.

“Improvements here are long overdue, so as part of our decade of renewal we’re excited to use funds we’ve collected from local property developers to finally get the bridge transformed into a striking landmark as well as a better and safer route for everyone who uses it.”

The road under Falcon Road rail bridge is a critical route connecting Battersea and the river with Balham and Tooting to the south and runs under Clapham Junction Station - one of London’s busiest transport hubs. The local community includes residents in Winstanley and York Road estates, Kambala estate and Falcon estate as well as shops and businesses in Clapham Junction town centre.

Developer contributions in North Battersea are administered to fund local improvement and community projects in the area.

Marsha de Cordova, MP for Battersea said: "I know many local residents and businesses will join me in welcoming this fantastic project. I have been campaigning for improvements to the whole environment under Falcon Road bridge, making it a more accessible and safer space for everyone, especially at night."

About the competition

The competition gives design teams the opportunity to create large-scale artistic interventions that address the bridge’s challenges while celebrating local character, vibrant community and rich heritage, particularly enhancing the area around Clapham Junction Station. We'll be working with local partners to deliver the project.

The installation will coincide with Wandsworth’s year as the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture 2025, which will showcase Wandsworth’s vibrant and diverse communities and arts and cultural offer. Find out more about our year of culture.

What happens next

• Interested applicants are invited to submit their expressions of interest by Thursday 12 September
• Shortlisted designs will be displayed at an exhibition and public vote in November before the final decision is announced in December
• The final design will be installed before the end of 2025.
