Wandsworth Bridge no longer London’s “most boring” bridge
Published: Thursday, April 17, 2025
Wandsworth Bridge, one of our borough’s key river crossings, has received a major glow up, as we’ve finished installing new exterior lighting. This project is part of our ongoing commitment to improving street scenes across Wandsworth, helping our residents feel pride in their streets and public spaces.

Built in 1939, Wandsworth Bridge was often referred to as London’s “most boring” bridge. During World War II, the bridge was painted a dull blue/grey for camouflage against potential air raids. While the air raids are long since gone, the bridge has remained blue, becoming part of its unique history and character. As Wandsworth celebrates its year as London Borough of Culture, the new lighting makes the bridge more visually appealing while respecting its historic roots.
Cllr Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "Wandsworth Bridge is a vital river crossing. This lighting scheme makes it a striking and inviting part of the local streetscape. This is just one example of how we’re working to create more pride in our streets and public spaces for everyone in Wandsworth."
Other ways we've been improving Wandsworth for everyone include:
- Our new 7 rings, 7 days pledge guarantees that we’ll work quickly on the things that matter most to you
- We’ve doubled our annual investment in resurfacing our roads and pavements
- Every household now can benefit from two free bulky waste collections a year, saving them £47 a year, and helping to keep our streets clean. We’ve also expanded our popular Mega Skip Days to twice a month to continue to help reduce fly-tipping
- Putney Bridge received ambitious walking and cycling safety improvements
- New neighbourhood signs, to boost pride in our communities
- Rejuvenating the historic Old York Road in Wandsworth Town to create a unique shared public realm.
Despite having the lowest Council Tax in the country, we’re committed to investing in Wandsworth, and improving the quality of our streets, houses, and services for everyone.
