The Night Time Strategy has won the Community Engagement category of The Pineapple Awards sponsored by the Design Council, which celebrate buildings and projects where people want to live, work and play
The strategy was published following an extensive public consultation that gave local people the opportunity to help shape the final published version. It reflects our ambition to be an open, modern and accessible council with a commitment to listening and responding to the issues residents care about.
The judges said they were “hugely impressed by this trailblazing initiative – the first night-time strategy of its kind.” They praised the scope of the consultation, reaching the whole borough as well as marginalized groups, with clever use of digital engagement tools.
“The project tackled critical issues, such as women’s safety, and extended its conclusions well beyond the built environment. A state-of-the-art example of how engagement can be innovative, inclusive and impactful” they said.
The Wandsworth Night Time Strategy sets out the borough’s strategic vision for the evening and night-time focusing on safety, how best to support night workers such as people working in hospitality and healthcare, and ensuing the night-time economy thrives, with a broader range of businesses beyond eating and drinking.
Work already happening or being developed as a result includes:
- Improvement works to Roehampton including artwork and lighting
- Improvements to the Falcon Road underpass
- The Ask for Clive scheme to protect LGBTQ+ people
- A new Safe Space and revival of Pubwatch in Clapham Junction
- Targeted police operation in response to reports of harassment
- Exploring anti-sexual harassment training as part of licensing conditions
Another council scheme, improvements to Totterdown Street in Tooting, was shortlisted for the Community Space award in the Pineapples.
Deputy Leader of the Council Kemi Akinola said: “We always strive to listen to local people and put their views at the heart of what we do, so I’m really pleased our efforts have been recognised.
We knew that each of our experience of night-time depends very much on what we do and who we are, so our team worked incredibly hard to find innovative ways to make sure everyone could get their voices heard. We’ll continue to use the strategy to inform long-term changes to make our borough as safe as possible for everyone.”
