Frank Bruno joins Wandsworth’s Black History Month celebrations

Boxing legend Frank Bruno visited Wandsworth this week to share his experience of growing up in the borough, his successful career and his struggles with his mental health.

The Wandsworth Civic Suite was packed with people attending the free event, organised by the council’s business support team as part of the council’s Black History Month programme. Local businesses served African Caribbean cuisine and sports and fitness businesses promoted the positive impact that sports and exercise have physical and mental well-being
“It was such a pleasure to meet Frank and I’d like to thank him for helping to break down stigmas surrounding mental health in the Black community by sharing his story in such an honest and open way,” said deputy council leader Cllr Kemi Akinola.
“This has been a fantastic Black History Month in Wandsworth, and we are grateful to all the organisations, businesses, residents and community groups who helped make it such a success.
“But we are determined that we will celebrate Black History every month which is why we have launched Black History Month 365 – a year-long celebration of Black culture and the contribution made by Black people to our community. This weekend events continue in borough libraries, including stories and games for children and an over 40s Disco Night, with music from the 1960s. Find out more.
And on Sunday, the Roots and Culture outdoor family-friendly event in Totterdown Street, Tooting will celebration African and Caribbean culture, with live music, dance, arts poetry, comedy, food, entertainment and more. Find out more.
