Flytipping on estates could leave you seriously out of pocket

The warning comes after a tenant on Battersea’s Winstanley estate was given a £400 fixed penalty notice after he was filmed dumping a significant amount of rubbish in a communal part of the estate.

As well as having to pay an on-the-spot-fine, the tenant was also charged for the cost of cleaning up his mess.

The council has recently upgraded its CCTV network with the new cameras delivering much sharper and clearer images – making the identification of flytippers’ faces and any vehicles they may be using to transport their waste much more effective.

Cabinet member for housing Cllr Aydin Dikerdem said: “There is absolutely no excuse for residents to dump rubbish on our estates. We have weekly collections for household waste and recycling, offer reasonably priced bulky waste collections and now have monthly mega-skip days where people can bring their waste and have it taken away free of charge.

“We also know that some individuals who live elsewhere choose to drive to our estates as they think this offers a safe and easy spot for them to flytip their rubbish.

“They shouldn’t have any illusions of this being a risk-free option for them. Our new cameras are making it much easier for us to identify and track them down and catching them is a priority for our housing teams.

“Dumping rubbish on street corners and footpaths or in car parks and communal gardens is never acceptable and people tempted to do it should understand the penalties they face.

“Our estates are great places to live and we want to keep them that way.”
