Wandsworth celebrates sporting stars

The Active Wandsworth Awards have celebrated the borough’s individuals, clubs, volunteers and coaches for all their hard work and exceptional achievements in 2021.

The evening was hosted by Sky Sports News presenter, Emma Paton, who was joined by special guests, Olympic Marathon Runner Steph Davis and Paralympic Table Tennis Star, Aaron McKibbin.
The winners were:
Sports Person of the Year: Steph Davis and fellow athlete Katie Snowden both represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Junior Sports Person of the Year: Athlete Fleur Tood Warmouth collected the award following her success in the 3000m that saw her finish the season ranked number one in the country.
Physical Activity Project of the Year: Live Karma Yoga won for their local outreach projects, working tirelessly to make physical activity more accessible to vulnerable groups including young people with disabilities, young offenders and young people with mental health conditions.
Sports Club/Organisation of the Year: Westside Football Club picked up the award for not only continuing to grow its membership but for its work in the community supporting both its own players and local groups and organisations.
Active School of the Year: St Michael’s Primary School, Southfields
Volunteer of the Year: Graham Harknett, Ian Ormiston, Ranna Patel, Xander Veldhiujzen, Tiago Alberquerque, Steve Knight, Step Parikan
Young Volunteer of the Year: Morgan Robinson, who volunteers at Lennox Youth Club
Coach/instructor of the Year: George Knight, who volunteers for nine hours a week at Ashburton Youth Club as part of the Kicks programme.
The Mayor’s Award: Alain Jason. Alain increases opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport.
Special recognition for their Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity: Steve Bosley from Herne Hill Harriers and Steve Walters from Westside Football Club were recognised for their work over a number of years.
Wandsworth Council’s cabinet member for Community Services and Open Spaces, Steffi Sutters, said: "We know that taking part in sport is good for people’s mental and physical health, and helps bring communities together.
“There are so many talented and inspirational sportspeople, coaches and volunteers in the borough, and this has been a really tough competition to judge. I would like to send my congratulations and thanks to this year’s winners, who have been deservedly recognised for their dedication and hard work.
Wandsworth leads on the Active Wandsworth partnership, which works with borough residents to help them get involved with and compete in sport. Through its contractor Enable, Wandsworth also has a Sports Development Team which works with young people in the community.
