Residents have their say on Garratt Lane traffic scheme

Nearly 2,300 local people took part in the consultation and 85 per cent were opposed to the scheme, which would have seen a trial one-way scheme come into effect in Penwith Road and Duntshill Road.

The public consultation was held following receipt of petitions from residents in these two roads.

Transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said: “I am grateful for to everyone who responded to the consultation. Residents have spoken and we have listened.”

He added: “It’s of crucial importance when considering any kind changes to neighbourhood traffic arrangements that the first thing you do is engage with local people and ask what they think. If you don’t have their buy-in, then the scheme will almost certainly not succeed.

“In this instance the response to the public consultation has proved beyond doubt that local people do not think this trial scheme would work because of the complexity and limitations of alternative routes crossing the River Wandle. Having heard those concerns and listened carefully to that feedback, it is clear it should not proceed.”

The trial would have seen one-way only motor traffic westbound on Penwith Road between Garratt Lane and the Strathville Road/Ravensbury Terrace junction and one-way southbound on Duntshill Road from Garratt Lane.
