New council housing commences and new play facilities being constructed at Winstanley and York Road estate

Work on the next social housing block on the Winstanley and York Road regeneration site has begun in earnest this month. Preparatory ground works have been ongoing since last year and Bennetts, the selected contractor is now on site and beginning the build.

The new block, currently known as Block 5, will provide 126 council homes including 13 wheelchair units. All units will be built to high modern standard and all homes contain fully adaptable bathrooms to cater for residents’ changing needs. These homes will rehouse existing secure tenants currently residing in Scholey House, Jackson House and Kiloh Court from the Winstanley and York Road estate as well as providing additional general needs housing for the Council.
Cllr Jonathan Cook, Cabinet Member for Housing at Wandsworth Council said:
“It is really fantastic news that work will now commence on building the next social housing block in the Winstanley and York Road scheme. Residents can look forward to moving into brand new council comes with direct views over the new park. This regeneration project is incredibly important to the council and will, once completed will result in a net increase of 397 new affordable homes.”
In addition to Block 5 starting on site, the Joint Venture has started work on new play and fitness facilities in the southern section of York Gardens South by Newcomen Road. This is to replace and improve upon the old adventure playground located at the north end of York Gardens which was closed due to safety reasons.
These improvements will cater for all ages and provide a diversity of play experiences and development of skills, offering play for children of all abilities.
Outside of the main Woodland Play Area, there will be fitness equipment and relocated table tennis tables offering play and exercise opportunities for older children. The new playground and improvements to York Gardens are due to be completed in May 2022.
