Everyone has a right to live free from violence and abuse this Christmas and beyond 

The financial strain of Christmas together with the Cost of Living crisis and other challenges means it’s anticipated that there will be an increase in domestic abuse over the festive period. 

Domestic abuse is any incident of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of their gender or sexuality. The abuse can be psychological and emotional, violent or threatening behaviour, physical and sexual, controlling or coercive behaviour and economic abuse. 

Cabinet member for community safety Graeme Henderson said: “Remember abuse can take many forms. If you are a victim, please reach out for help.  Some people may not realise they are victims so please keep an eye out for friends, neighbours or loved ones.”
