John Buckmaster - Green Plaque site
About John Buckmaster - Green Plaque site
John Charles Buckmaster (1820-1908) campaigned over several years to protect Wandsworth Common, leading marches through the common. Other nearby commons were also under threat, leading to the formation of the Open Spaces Society in 1865.
In July 1871, the Wandsworth Common Act was passed, saving the common from further enclosure and division. It is thanks to Buckmaster and those who fought with him that the Common remains open for everyone today. Find out more about John Charles Buckmaster Green Plaque.
