Alton Conservation Area

The Alton Conservation Area was designated on 15 March 2001.

It covers 58 hectares and has a number of listed buildings that are among the finest in the borough. These include Mount Clare and Parkstead House, which are Grade I.

Downshire House and the Temple to Mount Clare are listed as Grade II, as are the five slab blocks in Highcliffe Drive and the Bull statue at the foot of Downshire Field, along with sheltered accommodation bungalows in Minstead Gardens.

Allbrook House and Roehampton Library

On 7 July 2015, the Council was notified by Historic England that it had received an application to add Allbrook House and Roehampton Library to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.

In August, the Council commissioned an independent assessment of the listability of these buildings, while Historic England investigated the matter.

On 10 November 2015, Historic England informed us that the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport had decided not to add Allbrook House and Roehampton Library to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
