Emergency housing in the event of fire or flood
If you have lost your home because of a fire or flood and it is not habitable will try to find you somewhere to stay temporarily.
Temporary options
You might stay in bed and breakfast for a short time, while your home is being repaired or while somewhere more permanent is being arranged.
We realise that you might prefer to stay with family or friends. If you choose to do this, we can help you make arrangements to ensure you have somewhere suitable during such emergencies.

Private renting and emergencies
Your landlord is not usually responsible for finding you somewhere else to live, if you have to move out because of a flood or fire. But, they may have insurance that pays for alternative accommodation, so check with them as your landlord might pay or contribute towards your temporary housing (especially if you are still paying rent for your damaged home).
Paying rent
Your landlord might want you to keep paying rent for your home, even if it's being repaired and you can use only one or two rooms. You must keep paying the rent as you could be evicted if you don’t. But you could ask for a reduction whilst your home is being repaired.

Sorting out your documents and belongings
If your belongings and documents are damaged, you may need to replace and get copies of vital documents (such as ID) as soon as possible. Check if your insurance policies cover you for:
- Costs of repairs
- Replacement of your belongings
- Alternative accommodation if you can't return to your home
- Legal cover and legal advice
