How your bill is calculated
You’ll receive your bill during March each year, or as soon as you tell us you have moved into a property.
Council Tax for the majority of the borough has two parts:
- Local Council Tax set by us, made up of an element for general expenditure and an element to fund adult social care (ASC)
- A charge from The Greater London Authority (GLA) to cover services including fire, police and transport
Properties in the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators Levy pay an additional amount to fund the upkeep of the commons.
As part of the Local Government Finance Settlement 2025/26 the Secretary of State offered local authorities with adult social care responsibilities the option of increasing Council Tax that funds general expenditure by up to 2.99% without the need for a referendum, plus a further increase of up to 2% which must be spent on protecting ASC.
For 2025/26, we chose to freeze the general expenditure part of the charge and a 2% increase will be charged as a precept to fund ASC.
The Greater London Authority element increased by 4%.
Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators Levy
The levy charged by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators increased by 2.4% for 2025/26, and is now an annual charge of £40.10 for a band D property.

Band D properties
The average band D Council Tax is the blended rate of the amounts paid by the majority of the borough, and those properties that attract the additional levy for the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators.
The Council Tax attributable to Wandsworth includes a precept to fund ASC. The percentage increase shown for ASC does not correspond to the increase in the ASC alone, it’s the percentage increase of the total charge, attributable to ASC.

How bands are decided
Valuation bands are decided by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), who are part of the Inland Revenue, and not by us.
The valuation bands place properties in eight categories based on property value at 1 April 1991.
Band | Property value at 1 April 1991 |
---|---|
A | Up to £40,000 |
B | £40,001 to £52,000 |
C | £52,001 to £68,000 |
D | £68,001 to £88,000 |
E | £88,001 to £120,000 |
F | £120,001 to £160,000 |
G | £160,001 to £320,000 |
H | Values over £320,000 |
Any increase or fall in your home's value due to general changes in the housing market since 1991 will not affect its Council Tax valuation.
Properties that didn’t exist or which have been altered since 1 April 1991 are assessed as though they existed on that date.
Empty properties
Council Tax is payable on empty properties, and a premium may be charged in some cases. We do not give discounts for empty properties. This includes:
- Second homes
- Properties undergoing major repair or structural alteration
