Creative engagement projects
As part of the Night Time Strategy development, we commissioned two creative public realm projects. The aim was to help us better understand local people’s experiences of the borough at night. All the data and personal stories that were collected were used to inform the strategy.
Both projects were funded by a grant from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing & Communities to support better planning engagement.
Sounds of the borough
This is a collection of stories and sounds told and captured by local residents. The project was led by design studio Publica and completed in 2022.
About the project
Ten participants from across Wandsworth took part in a workshop series and created audio recordings during their daily lives. This collection captures the diversity of experiences, providing a window into the shared needs and realities of residents at night.
From the sounds of running down the stairs at Clapham Junction to the anticipation of a crowd waiting in line for a gig, the recordings bring the atmosphere of the borough to life.

The Deconstructed Disco
This is public realm installation that was designed by Hanna Benihoud Studio and completed in 2022.
About the project
The artwork was inspired by workshops with young people at local youth clubs, who also helped with the build. Each disco ‘shard’ was associated with a different emotion and played different music.
The finished product was installed by Falcon Road underpass in Clapham Junction for five days in October 2022, to coincide with daylight saving time. Evening events also took place across the borough in Roehampton, Wandsworth Town, Tooting, and Battersea.
An estimated total of 650 people engaged with the artwork and over 30 hours was spent talking to local people and visitors about their night time experiences in Wandsworth.
